An “absolutely terrifying” Zombie Captain America has joined the Halloween villain lineup during the Oogie Boogie Bash after-hours event that runs through Oct. 31 at Disney California Adventure.

Why is Captain America suddenly a zombie and how did the undead superhero end up in Avengers Campus?

An episode of Marvel’s “What If…?” animated television series on the Disney+ streaming service that takes place during a zombie apocalypse sees Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Strange and other Avengers turned into the walking dead.

Disney has strived to keep Avengers Campus current and contemporary with characters like Loki and Shang-Chi showing up in DCA’s new Marvel themed land when their new shows debut on Disney+ and new movies appear in theaters. Zombie Cap, with his skull-like face and tattered superhero uniform, is the latest entry in that new tradition.

Scary and terrifying are not the Halloween hallmarks of the Happiest Place on Earth. Bloody and gory horror has long been the domain of Knott’s Scary Farm, Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and Fright Fest at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Disneyland and DCA have stuck with family-friendly spooky and creepy frights during the Halloween season —until now.

Cruella DeVille from the live-action “Cruella,” “WandaVision” witch Agatha Harkness and “Toy Story” antagonist Sid Phillips joined the rogue lineup of Disney, Marvel and Pixar villains dotting the immersive treat trails this Halloween season during Oogie Boogie Bash. The mid-event addition of Zombie Captain America introduced a scary and terrifying new villain to the mix.

“Zombie Cap looks absolutely perfect and absolutely terrifying,” according to CinemaBlend. “This is pretty cool, and honestly, one of the scariest looking things Disney has ever shown off.”

CinemaBlend wonders aloud if Zombie Iron Man could soon join Undead Cap during the remainder of Oogie Boogie Bash and imagines a “chilling” Avengers Campus infested with Marvel Zombies during future Halloween events.

The “terrifyingly accurate” and “hauntingly realistic” Zombie Cap snarls and growls at thrilled park-goers who want even more Marvel monsters in the parks, according to ScreenRant.

“Attendees of the event quickly took to social media to share photos and videos of this haunting debut with many praising the accuracy of the costume as well as the mannerisms of the character,” according to ScreenRant. “Now many are calling for them to keep the undead coming and to bring the likes of Zombie Scarlet Witch and Iron Man to the parks as well.”

A zombie infestation of Avengers Campus isn’t completely far-fetched — although it would be a stark departure from Disneyland’s traditional Halloween offerings.

A “Marvel Zombies” five-issue limited series comic was published in 2005-06 and a live-action treatment could be in the pipeline “further down the line,” according to Mark Millar, who penned Marvel’s Civil War and Fantastic Four comics.

“This just proves Disney would make such a cool haunt event during Halloween,” Inkiad Kabir wrote on Twitter. “Zombie Captain America genuinely looks terrifying.”

Could Zombie Captain America be a test to see how visitors would react to a Marvel Zombies takeover of Avengers Campus during future Oogie Boogie Bash events?

For now, Zombie Cap is trapped behind a barrier to maintain physical distancing amid continuing COVID-19 health and safety precautions. We will have to wait and see if Marvel Zombies infest every corner of Avengers Campus next Halloween.
