Marvel Studios recast Cassie Lang for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania after her appearance in Avengers: Endgame, but why? During the first two Ant-Man movies, Scott Lang’s young daughter Cassie was played by Abby Ryder Fortson but that had to change once Endgame happened. The five-year time jump meant she was too young to continue playing the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, resulting in Emma Fuhrmann taking over the role.

Fuhrmann’s casting in Avengers: Endgame seemed to position her for a big MCU future. Now that Cassie is a teenager, she is in the perfect spot to become a superhero just like her dad. The comics saw Cassie become a superhero known as Stature/Stinger/Ant-Girl and join the Young Avengers. Although Furhmann only played Cassie in two scenes, the decision to cast her for Endgame should’ve meant she’d continue playing her in the years to come. However, Marvel Studios instead decided to recast Cassie for Ant-Man 3.

The decision to recast Cassie Lang for Ant-Man 3 was revealed in late 2020 when Marvel unveiled new details about all of Phase 4. Kevin Feige confirmed the film’s title of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the returns of Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer, and confirmation that Jonathan Majors will play Kang the Conqueror. But, he also announced that Kathryn Newton will play Cassie in Ant-Man 3 and not Fuhrmann.

Why The MCU Recast Cassie Lang

One of the main reasons Ant-Man 3 likely recast Cassie Lang was to get a bigger star in the role. Kathryn Newton is a rising star in Hollywood after roles in Freaky, Big Little Lies, The Society, and Blockers. She also has blockbuster experience from Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which could be beneficial in Marvel’s eyes. Marvel may have just wanted to secure a more recognizable name to play Cassie Lang going forward, considering the Ant-Man star should have a big MCU future. Although in some instances of recasting, scheduling can be an issue, Fuhrmann didn’t have conflicting projects when Ant-Man 3‘s production took place. A potential caveat to this is if the 19-year-old actress is too busy with school to make room for a blockbuster production.

How Old Cassie Lang is In The MCU

Now that Kathryn Newton is playing Cassie Lang in Ant-Man 3, she’ll take over the role for the MCU’s future. But, she’ll be playing a character a few years younger than her actual age. Cassie Lang was born in 2007 in the MCU, which means she was 17 years old when Avengers: Endgame took place. It isn’t confirmed how long after these events Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania takes place. However, Cassie should still be a teenager when Kathryn Newton makes her MCU debut as the future Young Avenger.
