Cue the “Oh No” TikTok sound. We have another case of the 2000s fashion trends resurfacing in 2022.
This time, the subject for our TikTok trend are the flared bottomed, rolled waistband, low-rise pants known to many millennials as gauchos.
We thought they were retired, but to our surprise they were spotted once again by a TikTok user, found in a Target of all places.
The video by @exploringamanda has now racked up over 1.1 million views, showing us the array of flared pants by Target brand Wild Fable lining the shelves. The comment section is then filled with the very specific debate over whether these are in fact gauchos or really “flared leggings” which is Gen Z’s new name for yoga pants.
These pants were seen in every single middle and high school hallway, many in shades of brown for some reason as pointed out in the video below, and some with bedazzled waistbands and funky prints. The best part about the pants were just how comfortable they were, as they are much loser than leggings and even softer than loungewear, somehow deemed appropriate to wear in public as opposed to pajama pants. The worst part? Just about everyone wearing them was probably shoving the flared pant legs into UGGs on a wet and snowy day.
Aside from flared leggings, they are also sometimes called “culottes” if you happen to bring this up to your elder millennial or Boomer buddies. Regardless, we’ve been seeing them pop back up and it is bringing back fashion flashbacks for sure.
If you are all aboard the gaucho train but seem to have grown a bit since 2005 and need some new pairs, we have you covered. Read on for some 2022 stores that carry the 2000s trend in all the colors and sizes you could ever want.
Where to buy gauchos in 2022:
1. Women’s Fold-Over Waistband Flare Yoga Pants, $18
While we still aren’t sure if these are yoga pants, flared leggings or gauchos, these are the pants that sparked the conversation. They do look super comfortable and feature the roll-down waistband and the brown color we loved so much, so we are on board. Plus, at $18 they are a steal.
2. ASOS Design Tailored Clean Culottes, $19.80
For a more classic pair of culottes, check these out. The black pants are oh-so comfy, with a very baggy leg and a stretchy waistband on top that screams 2000’s.
3. HEYHUN Women’s Solid Flared Capri Boho Gaucho Pants, $32
Really embrace all the trends of the 2000s with these classic gauchos. Sold on Amazon, there are options for the regular flared pants as well as a high-low pair that combine two beloved trends into one.
4. Jenny Kayne Wool and Cashmere Blend Culotte Pants, $195
We love cashmere, so these may be out favorite pair of pants on the list. They are sold at Nordstrom and also come in black, but we obviously chose the brown pair for nostalgia sake.
5. Ralph Lauren Velvet Tie-Front Gaucho Pant, $199 (originally $398)
If anyone knows how to class up a trend, it is Ralph Lauren. These classy pants are actually made of velvet, adding even more flair to the flared gauchos. They are also over $100 off, now just $199 while supplies last.
6. lululemon Align Super-High-Rise Wide Leg Crop 23″, $59 (originally $98)
We were thrilled to find some flared leggings at lululemon and these really do resemble the gauchos we knew and loved. They come in a variety of colors and are currently in the We Made Too Much section for a great price.
7. Hard Tail Women’s Rolldown Double Layer Voile Pant Style, $49 to $98
These pants check all the boxes. They have a roll-down, fold-over waistband, come in an array of colors like black, navy, white and the iconic brown and of course feature the flowing legs of true gauchos. Find them on Amazon, ranging in price due to size and color choices.
