Skeet Ulrich is looking back at the making of Scream!

The 51-year-old actor played Billy Loomis in the cult-classic film, an avid horror movie buff who is the boyfriend of protagonist Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and the Ghostface killer terrorizing his peers.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly to celebrate the movie’s 25th anniversary, Skeet shared that he came to set thinking he was acting in a serious character study of a teenage serial killer.

“I think part of it was the mindset of Billy and me getting into that mindset,” he said. “I saw it as this very serious documentary about two killers in high school and I was researching serial killers and the psychology of them, so I didn’t really key into the humor of the story until take one of day one.”

By “day one, scene one, take one,” Skeet came to the realization that the movie had a much lighter comedic tone than he had expected.

When the ensemble cast first came together to shoot the fountain sequence, the actor recalled feeling confused by the “humorous moments” his co-stars Matthew Lillard and Jamie Kennedy brought to the scene.

“I just remember thinking, ‘What are they doing?’ Don’t they know?” he said. “Like, ‘This isn’t funny. This isn’t supposed to be funny.’ And man, was I wrong.”

The first trailer for the fifth installment of the Scream franchise dropped earlier this month and you can watch it here!
