The owner of restaurant Jack the Chipper which has been boycotted by customers who have slammed the name for glorifying a serial killer has insisted he has no plans to change the name.
Owner Recep Turhan, 52, opened the chippy in Greenwich, South East London, after the success of the original shop based in the East End area of Whitechapel, where the Ripper was renowned for preying on his victims – who were mainly female prostitutes.
Appearing on ITV’s This Morning today, he told how he has no plans to change the name of the shop – despite customer complaints.
‘The other shop is in Brick Lane and I don’t have any kind of problems in that area,’ he said, speaking to presenters Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes. ‘I don’t have any problems with customers there – we’re going very well.’
Recep’s son Cagri Turhan, who is the manager of the chip shop, added: ‘We don’t want to change the name. We don’t want to disrespect anyone. We’ve already shown our respectfulness by offering 50% discount for women just to show we’re not here to be disrespectful or damaging in any sense. We’re just here to provide good food and a good service.’

Eamonn Holmes went on to ask Cagri Turhan how bad the boycott and backlash in Greenwich has actually been.
‘It’s quite bad at the moment – more online than anything else,’ he said. ‘The customers that we have inside the shop – when they come in they love the food and say our product and customer service is great.’
‘However, these specific people who are trying to boycott the shop itself try to always give us negative feedback and reviews online and try to damage the reputation of the business.’
Ruth went on to ask Cagri what sort of things people are saying online.
When asked whether it would not just be easier to change the name, Recep (pictured left, with son Cagri, right) explained: ‘Not really because the business in the Brick Lane, White Chapel area is very good.
‘There’s mixed complaints – some are saying just out of spite that there’s this wrong with it, that wrong with it,’ he explained. ‘There’s specific complaints saying we’re going to boycott this because we’re not happy with the name.’
When asked whether it would not just be easier to change the name, Recep explained: ‘Not really because the business in the Brick Lane, White Chapel area is very good. We are trying to sell the best traditional fish and chips. I’m very happy. I don’t want to change my baby’s name in the middle of the age.’
Ruth went on to ask the pair whether they understood that Jack the Ripper was a serial killer, whose victims were typically female prostitutes, and that people may think making a joke out of the name is almost glamourising violence towards women.
‘I totally understand this one,’ said Recep. ‘I’m being respectful to women complaining about the name and I say to him, “I’ll give the person 50% discount and everybody will be happy.”‘
‘I don’t think we will change the name because this is the history from 160 years ago. I’m only using a play on words for the name and nothing else.

This Morning viewers took to Twitter to express their very mixed opinions on the matter (pictured)
‘Some people hate it, buy some people love it. They stop in the traffic and say they like it.’
Cagri went on to say: ‘At the end of the day we’ve always said two things: We’re here to provide good and fresh food for our customers and we’re here to provide goods customer service.’
‘The customers who actually come inside our shop always say “ah yeah it’s a play on words” and they’ve always loved our food and the friendly atmosphere that we bring to our customers.
‘We try and make sure they come in and bring them the best service, and when they’re leaving we make sure they leave as happy as possible with our fresh ingredients.’
However, viewers had very mixed opinions on the matter.
‘How is this chip shop only “glorifying” Jack the Ripper when there’s tours and movies about him? The people boycotting this place are beyond morons.. leave the guys alone,’ wrote one, while a second penned: ‘I feel for Jack the chipper! It’s literally a play on words … so what about the Jack the Ripper tours who are directly making money from these awful murders?
Another commented: ‘Oh my god really I think it’s a Clever play on words…there’s literally Jack the Ripper TOURS…’ while a further added: ‘People are boycotting a chip shop in London because it’s called Jack the Chipper and glorifies Jack the Ripper. Grow up! This is NOT against women. Give. Me. A. Break!!’
Elsewhere, others slammed the play on words and wrote: ‘Let’s be honest. It’s a s***t name. It’s a bad pun. They have no idea that Jack the Ripper was an evil piece of work in the 1800’s.’
