John Boyega has been hit by claims that he abruptly pulled out of movie Rebel Ridge without telling execs about his plan to leave. The actor, 29, was revealed to no longer be working on the thriller at the start of June, with Netflix citing family reasons were behind his shock mid-shoot exit.

John Boyega has been hit by claims that he abruptly pulled out of movie Rebel Ridge without telling execs about his plan to leave.

The actor, 29, was revealed to no longer be working on the thriller at the start of June, with Netflix citing ‘family reasons’ were behind his shock mid-shoot exit.

However, several insiders have now claimed that the Small Axe star was dealing with a ‘myriad of issues’ and filmmakers didn’t know he had left until they discovered he’d checked out of his hotel room, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Speaking with the publication, one source alleged that John was dealing with issues ranging ‘from the script to his accommodations’.

And another detailed his reported unannounced exit, claiming that the actor left his hotel without telling anyone of his intention to bow out of the movie.

John’s agent Femi Oguns vehemently denied the claims, saying: ‘The rumours are completely untrue. People will form their opinions often rooted from boredom.

‘As stated John unfortunately left due to family reasons which in truth is none of anyone’s business except his own.

‘John and Netflix have a wonderful relation which will continue to grow for years to come whether that be through his acting or through [his production company] UpperRoom.’

MailOnline has contacted Netflix and John’s representatives for further comment.

Industry sources expressed their surprise to THR at a  leading star actually stepping down from a movie role once the shoot starts, saying the move is very rare.

It is thought that Rebel Ridge, which reportedly has a $25m budget, has now paused production while Netflix finds a new lead, with some crew reportedly being laid off.

It was reported at the start of June that the Star Wars: The Last Jedi actor had pulled out of filming mid-shoot.

Filming started at the beginning of May in Louisiana and John was the leading part in the film created by Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier.

A spokesperson for Netflix told Deadline: ‘Rebel Ridge is pausing temporarily as we look to re-cast John Boyega who needed to leave the project for family reasons.

‘We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier ‘s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production.

‘We look forward to continuing our partnership withJohn Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film They Cloned Tyrone in which he also stars.’

The film was originally set to shoot in April 2020 but was delayed because to the pandemic.

The movie has been described as ‘a high-velocity thriller that explores systemic American injustices through intense action sequences, suspense and dark humor’.
