Irvine man latest Orange County resident arrested for Capitol insurrection

An Irvine man who allegedly posed as a member of the press was arrested Friday, July 9, by the FBI in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in an effort to thwart to the certification of votes for President Joe Biden.

An Irvine man who allegedly posed as a member of the press was arrested Friday, July 9, by the FBI in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in an effort to thwart to the certification of votes for President Joe Biden.

Matthew Thomas Purse has been charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, and parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.

According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Purse was photographed inside the Capitol wearing a tactical vest and black helmet both emblazoned with the word “press.”

There is no indication that Purse has legitimate press credentials or is affiliated with any news organization, the FBI said in an arrest warrant affidavit accompanying the complaint.
