The two Texas brothers accused of slaughtering four family members before killing themselves said they lied about their mental illness to get weapons — ripping gun control as “a joke.”
In a rambling 12-page note initially linked to his Instagram page, Farhan Towhid, 19, said that he and his 21-year-old brother, Tanvir Towhid, assumed getting guns would be the most challenging part of the murder-suicide plot that was finally executed on Saturday.
Instead, they found that “gun control in the US is a joke,” the youngest Towhid brother wrote in the note that police confirmed to CBS DFW is linked to the gruesome bloodbath.
“All my brother had to do was go to the gunshop, say something about wanting a gun for home defense, sign some forms, and that was it.
“There was a question asking if he had any mental illnesses but—get this—he lied.
‘He literally just said no. They didn’t ask for proof or if he was taking any medication (he was),” he wrote.
“Thanks for making the process so easy,” he said.
Police believe the Bangladeshi brothers killed their parents, Iren and Towhidul Islam, grandmother, Altafun Nessa, and Farhan’s 19-year-old twin sister, Farbin, on Saturday at the family’s home in Allen, CBS DFW said.
All six victims were discovered by police dead with gunshot wounds during a wellness check at about 1 a.m. on Monday, the report said. It was not immediately clear what guns were used.
The police description matched Farhan’s plans in his note, which had opened with, “Hey everyone, I killed myself and my family.”
“The plan was simple. We get two guns. I take one and shoot my sister and grandma, while my brother kills our parents with the other. Then we take ourselves out,” he wrote.
The bloodbath was a result of both brothers battling depression, he wrote.
“I’ve had depression since 9th grade (2016). Not the ‘damn, I failed my test’ depression everyone says they have, more like a ‘I only cut myself twice today, that’s better than usual,’” Farhan wrote, saying his brother’s condition “was much worse.”
“The dude is a f—ing genius but is too depressed and socially anxious to do anything with it,” he wrote.
His brother first suggested the mass murder-suicide in February, and it was based on “pure logic,” Farhan wrote.
“I love my family. I genuinely do. And that’s exactly why I decided to kill them,” he said.
“If I killed myself, they would be miserable. They would spend the rest of their lives feeling guilt, despair, and a multitude of other adjectives that mean sad.
“Instead of having to deal with the aftermath of my suicide, I could just do them a favor and take them with me. None of us would ever have to feel sad ever again,” he wrote.
However, he also admitted, “If I’m going to die, I might as well get some attention.”
Allen police told CBS that they had no prior interaction with the family that would give any indication such a tragedy could be about to happen.
Family friend Shawn Ahsan told the outlet that everyone who knew the family is “heartbroken.”
“When I heard the news I couldn’t breathe for 20 to 30 minutes. How could it happen in a community like us? We’re so close and we visit each other and talk to each other, we have dinner and stuff,” Ahsan said.
“But inside the house… his children were unhappy for some reason and one thing led to another.”
